The Approval Process

  1. When a complete package outlining a new protocol is submitted to the Institutional Review Board, it is reviewed by the Department of Research within four days.
    If packet is incomplete, it is returned to the primary investigator.
  2. The package is sent to the Institutional Review Board Office to be placed on the next agenda. The information is sent to the Reviewers.
  3. The protocol is discussed at the IRB meeting.
    If the protocol is approved, an IRB approval letter and approved consent is sent to the Department of Research within two days. The Department of Research approval letter is generated, and research may begin upon receipt of both approval letters.
    If the protocol receives contingent approval, letters outlining IRB concerns requiring correction/clarification will be sent from the IRB office within three days of the meeting. When the IRB receives the addressed contingencies, the information is sent out to the primary reviewer. The protocol is reviewed and approved under an expedited review mechanism. The IRB approval letter and approved consent is sent to the Department of Research within two days. The Department of Research approval letter is generated, and research may begin upon receipt of both approval letters.
    If the protocol is rejected, a letter detailing the reasons for rejection is sent to the primary investigator within three days.
